80,000-Pound Tractor-Trailer Driver Arrested For DWI On LIE: Police

BRENTWOOD, NY — A tractor-trailer driver was arrested Monday morning and charged with driving while intoxicated after multiple 911 callers reported the truck was swerving on the Long Island Expressway in Brentwood, Suffolk County police said.

Highway Patrol officers responded to the eastbound Long Island Expressway, west of Exit 57, at about 7 a.m. after callers reported that the driver of a tractor-trailer was failing to maintain the lane of travel, police said.

Officers located the vehicle and determined the driver, Frederic Mejia, was intoxicated, police said.

Mejia, 35, of 1750 East 172nd St. in the Bronx, was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, police said.

Motor Carrier Safety Section officers also responded to perform a safety inspection of the vehicle, which was carrying grocery items, according to police.

Police said the tractor-trailer, owned by LV Carrier Corp., weighed about 80,000 pounds at the time of the incident.

Mejia was scheduled for arraignment on Monday, April 13, at First District Court in Central Islip.
