BRENTWOOD, NY — A Brentwood Union Free School District guidance counselor is being recognized at the state level for her work helping students navigate the college and financial aid process.
Melissa Ferguson, a guidance counselor at Brentwood High School, received the 2026 New York State College Application Month Award of Excellence, which honors individuals, schools, and institutions that use creative and effective strategies to connect students with financial aid resources and increase college application submissions.
“I am truly grateful for Melissa and the love and passion she brings to her work every single day,” Superintendent Wanda Ortiz-Rivera said. “She believes deeply in our students and goes above and beyond to expose them to college, careers, and the trades, helping them see all that is possible for their future and the many paths available to them.”
Ferguson, a Brentwood alumna, has implemented a range of initiatives designed to simplify the college application and financial aid process while increasing access to resources. Her efforts have connected families with financial aid experts, tools, and hands-on support, helping demystify key steps such as completing the FAFSA and other aid forms.
District officials said her work has led to a measurable increase in college applications and financial aid submissions, expanding postsecondary opportunities for students across the district.
“She walks alongside our students and their families through the financial aid process with care, patience and dedication, making something that can feel overwhelming feel possible,” Ortiz-Rivera said. “What I admire most is how deeply she believes in our students and helps them recognize their own potential. Her guidance is invaluable, and the impact she has on their lives will stay with them long beyond high school. We are incredibly proud of her and so grateful for all that she does for our Brentwood family.”
