📰 News we're reading

• Central Islip residents press for more rail crossing fixes despite MTA's planned eliminations (news12.com) — Federal funding is helping the MTA study eliminating the dangerous Wicks Road/Fifth Avenue rail crossing in Brentwood, along with crossings in Central Islip and Wyandanch. Local officials say other nearby crossings still cause long delays and can trap fire trucks for up to 30 minutes. The MTA is also working with state transportation officials on additional grade-crossing fixes in Suffolk County.

• Federal agents forbidden by judge from arresting immigrants at court hearings (newsday.com) — A federal judge has barred immigration agents from arresting immigrants at courthouses, a ruling that could affect Brentwood families like that of a local mother of five previously detained after a hearing. Civil rights advocates say the decision should make it safer for immigrants to attend court, while federal officials may still appeal. The ruling currently applies to immigration courts nationwide, including in New York.
