Central Islip firefighters, along with other fire departments, extinguished the fire, and the two dogs were found dead, police said, adding that five officers were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Following an investigation by Arson Squad detectives, the homeowners' son, Robert Alston, 39, of Brooklyn, was charged with second-degree arson and burglary, as well as false personation, police said.

He has been scheduled to be arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Central Islip.
