Brentwood Man Faked Kidnapping To Get Ex's Attention: Suffolk Police

Police spent several days investigating a Brentwood man's kidnapping, only to have him say he made it up, a news release said.

BRENTWOOD, NY — Police spent several days investigating a Brentwood man's kidnapping, only to have him tell them he made it up to "gain favor" with an estranged partner, a news release said.

Suffolk County Police Fourth Squad detectives arrested 49-year-old Luis R. Umanzor on Friday, the news release said. Umanzor claimed three strangers abducted from a 7-Eleven in Islandia on the morning of June 16, police said.

"Umanzor said the men put a bag over his head, forced him into a car, and kept him at an unspecified location against his will for several hours before dropping him off at a local hospital," Suffolk County police said.

"Following an extensive two-day investigation, Umanzor was brought in to the Fourth Precinct for further questioning where he admitted to lying to police about the kidnapping in an attempt to gain favor with his estranged spouse," police said. "He was arrested and charged with Falsely Reporting an Incident 3rd Degree and Making an Apparently Sworn Statement 2nd Degree."

Umanzor will appear in First District Court in Central Islip on a later date, police said.
