Brentwood VFW Post To Receive Much Needed Donation For Repairs

The local hall will be receiving money from a donor for repairs to the kitchen.

Just in time for Veterans Day, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Brentwood will be receiving money for much needed upgrades.

On Thursday, New York State Assemblywoman Christine Pellegrino and former NYPD Officer Sean Acosta along with Suffolk County Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander Sabrina Lacy held a press conference to announced that the local post will receive support from New York State.

The support is part of an initiative to fix aging posts across Long Island that have been badly damaged or destroyed over the last few years and lack sufficient funds to make the needed repairs.

The Brentwood VFW, located on 140 Wurz Street is America's oldest and largest veteran's organization, dating back over 118 years.

The organization is composed of thousands of posts and serves millions of former service men and women. Suffolk County has the largest number of veterans in New York State.

However, this year the Brentwood VFW Post will be forced to celebrate Veterans Day without a working kitchen and a roof that is falling apart.

Many other Posts on Long Island are also aged and do not have the necessary funding to make repairs. This past year, a total of five VFW posts closed its doors in Suffolk County, according to a report in CBS.

Luckily, that will soon be changing, thanks to a donation from Acosta, who will be providing the necessary funds so that local needy and homeless vets can have a new kitchen at the Post in addition to the .

“Veterans who come home from war need a place to relax,” Acosta told Newsday. “Right now, these guys don’t even have a place to cook.”

The total cost of the renovations will be about $20,000.

“This place is a tool for me to reach other veterans who don’t have hope,” Jeremiah Simpson, a Vietnam War veteran and Central Islip resident told Newsday. “This place is my way of giving back.”
