Central Islip School District: Reed Students Sow Seeds For An Autumn Harvest

A group of 8th Grade students from Reed Middle School
embarked upon a field trip to the Island Harvest Food Bank Farm on the
property of Sisters of St. Joseph's in Brentwood, where they prepared
soil and sowed seeds that will eventually
produce a fall crop of vegetables. Next month, the students will return
to the farm to reap the fruits of their labors and harvest their crop
which Island Harvest Food Bank will distribute to local community food
drives and pantries. The field trip activity
ties in with the Reed Family Garden under the direction of liaison and
teacher, Ms. Ivette Rios. Students learn about sustainable gardening,
healthy dietary, nutritional dietary habits, the rewards of teamwork,
and humanitarian efforts in giving back to their
community through this hands-on, enriching activity.
