Cop Injured After DWI Driver Crashes Into Police Car: PD
A man was charged with driving while intoxicated after his car crashed into a police vehicle and injured an officer, police say.
BRENTWOOD, NY — An officer was injured after a man, who was driving while intoxicated, crashed into a police vehicle in Brentwood, Suffolk County Police said.
Nicolas Chicas, 48 of Bay Shore, was arrested and charged with DWI on Sunday, police said.
According to police, Chicas was driving a 2000 Toyota Corolla in the left lane of northbound 5th Avenue at 9:17 p.m. when he attempted to turn right on to Arizona Avenue. He then crashed his Toyota into the driver’s side door of a marked police vehicle traveling northbound in the right lane, police said.

The police vehicle had been responding to a call, with lights and siren activated, at the time of the crash, police said.
The occupant of the police vehicle, a Third Precinct Patrol officer, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

When police arrived at the scene, officers said Chicas was intoxicated, but not injured, authorities said.
He is being held overnight at the Third Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Monday, police said.
