Drunk Man Crashes Minivan Into Central Islip 7-Eleven: Police

The 23-year-old fled the scene after the crash and was caught by officers a short time later, police say.

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY - A Central Islip man was arrested for driving while intoxicated after he crashed his vehicle into a store in Central Islip and fled the scene on Sunday morning, according to Suffolk Police.

Ronald Rivera, 23, was in the driver’s seat of a 2002 Toyota minivan parked in front of 7-Eleven at 121 Carleton Ave. when he accidentally put the vehicle into drive and crashed into the front of the building at about 1:18 a.m., police said.

The front windows of the store were broken. A Town of Islip building inspector determined there was no structural damage to the building.

Rivera left the scene on foot, police said.

He was apprehended nearby a short time later by Third Precinct Patrol officers.

Rivera was arrested and charged with DWI and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, police said. He was also issued a summons for driving without a license. No one was injured in the crash.

Rivera is being held overnight at the Third Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned in the morning, police said.
