Police Chase Man Caught With Stolen Car In Brentwood

The 28-year-old tried to run away, leading officers on a chase before he was arrested on Thursday afternoon, police say.

BRENTWOOD, NY - Police chased down a Far Rockaway man who tried to run away after he was caught with a stolen jeep in Brentwood on Thursday afternoon.

According to Suffolk Police, officers saw a grey Jeep that had previously been reported stolen stopped at Barleau Street at about 1:30 p.m.

As the officers were interviewing the driver of the car, identified as 28-year-old Barry Haywood, he fled on foot, police said.

A foot pursuit followed and a Canine officer responded with his dog, Maverick. Within 30 minutes, Maverick found Haywood in a back yard on Barleau Street, police said.

Haywood was arrested and charged with third degree criminal possession of stolen property.

During the chase, Pine Park Elementary School briefly went on lock down as a precautionary measure after the district was informed by Suffolk Police of "police activity" nearby.

No injuries were reported.
