Man Killed in Head-On Crash: PD

One person died and another was injured after a car crashed into traffic head-on in Central Islip on Sunday, Suffolk County Police say.

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY — One person died and another was injured after a car crashed into traffic head-on in Central Islip on Sunday, Suffolk County Police said.

A man was driving a 2005 Toyota Camry westbound on West Suffolk Avenue at 2:18 a.m., police said, when his vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic. The Camry struck a 2006 Ford Mustang, driven by Fernando Cordero, 24, in front of 101 West Suffolk Avenue, police said.

The driver of the Toyota was taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore where he was pronounced dead, police said. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Cordero, of Brentwood, was also taken to South Shore University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

No charges have been filed, police said.

Both vehicles were impounded for a safety check. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to call the Third Squad at 631-854-8352.
