Brentwood, New York (October 2020)—The Brentwood Union Free School District (BUFSD) joined school districts throughout the United States as they recently celebrated Unity Day, a nationally observed event organized to unite people in the fight for bullying prevention.

At Oak Park Elementary School, its Unity Day Rainbow Coalition spearheaded the collaboration of a beautiful rendition of Sara Bareilles’ song “Brave” to promote empathy, kindness and inclusion. The socially-distant performance, led by Principal Lisa Catandella on the microphone, featured Mr. Johnson on the piano and Mr. Cromwell on the guitar. The lyrics, coupled with the upbeat tempo, underscored many messages on Unity Day—aspire to be brave, have a voice and be heard. The performance by Unity Day Rainbow Coalition helped reinforce the importance of promoting an inclusive, tolerable and empathetic environment for Oak Park’s students and staff.
