Police ID State Trooper Struck By Car

The trooper was hit while helping a disabled motorist.

State Police have identified the trooper who was struck by a car on the LIE overpass ramp to the Sagtikos Parkway on Monday afternoon as 35-year-old Joseph J. Gallagher.

He is assigned to Troop L, SP Brentwood. Gallagher has been a member of the State Police since 2014, and has previously been assigned to Troop F and Troop T.

Gallagher is out of surgery and is now listed in serious condition at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore.

BRENTWOOD/COMMACK, NY - A trooper is in critical condition after being struck by a car on the exit ramp of the Long Island Expressway on Monday afternoon, according to State Police.

The trooper was hit while helping a disabled motorist on the overpass from the LIE westbound at Exit 53 to the Sagtikos State Parkway by the border of Brentwood and Commack at about 2:30 p.m.

The trooper suffered serious injuries and was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore and is undergoing surgery.

The driver of the car did stop at the scene; no charges have been filed in the crash.

The name of the trooper is being withheld at this time.
