Suffolk Police Recruits Given Gun Safes To Promote Safe Storage, Officials Say
New officers received personal safes through a partnership with health officials and law enforcement groups, officials say.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — New Suffolk County police recruits are being equipped with personal gun safes as part of a broader effort to promote responsible firearm storage and enhance safety both at home and in the community, officials said.
The initiative, led by the Suffolk County Police Foundation in partnership with the Northwell Health Center for Gun Violence Prevention and local law enforcement unions, provides each graduating recruit with a safe for secure off-duty weapon storage.
“Providing personal gun safes to our newest officers is a meaningful way to reinforce the importance of responsible firearm storage,” Foundation Chairman Louis Tutone said. “These safes offer peace of mind to officers and their families, while also contributing to overall community safety.”

The safes are distributed to members of the current graduating class of the Suffolk County Police Academy, marking what officials described as a proactive investment in both officer readiness and public safety.
The initiative was made possible through the generosity of the Suffolk County Police Foundation and the team at the Northwell Health Center for Gun Violence Prevention, and law enforcement unions, who continue to support programs that benefit local law enforcement. The Foundation works year-round to identify opportunities that improve officer safety, training, and quality of life.

“These recruits have made a commitment to keeping our streets and communities safe, sometimes at their own peril,” Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine said. "Thank you to the Suffolk County Police Foundation’s effort to provide gun safes to new officers so that they can maintain the same level of awareness and safety they bring to the people every day they put on their uniforms and go to work."
Officials said the initiative is part of ongoing efforts by the Police Foundation to improve officer safety, training, and quality of life while strengthening ties between law enforcement and the community.
“Safe and responsible firearm storage is a fundamental part of that commitment, both on and off duty,” Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina said.
Union leaders, including representatives from the Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association and Deputy Sheriffs PBA, also voiced support, calling the program an important step in reinforcing responsibility and safety among new officers.
Officials said the program is designed to reinforce safe firearm practices early in officers’ careers while supporting their well-being and that of their families.
Dr. Chethan Sathya, director of Northwell’s Center for Gun Violence Prevention, said the effort reflects a “partnership-driven approach” to addressing gun violence as a public health issue.
“When law enforcement and health care providers lead by example through responsible ownership and safe storage practices, we create safer neighborhoods for everyone,” Sathya said.
