BRONXVILLE, NY — Some exceptional student have made a name for themselves in New York, and are on their way to make history on a national stage.
Bronxville High School students earned honors at the state level of the 2026 National History Day Competition on April 26 at SUNY Oneonta, securing a place in the national competition scheduled for June 16 in Maryland.
Students competed with original historical research tied to this year’s theme, “Revolution, Reaction and Reform in History.” Projects were presented in one of five formats: paper, website, documentary, performance or exhibit. Their work was evaluated by a panel of professional historians and educators.
Social studies teacher Dana Landesman praised the students’ approach throughout the event. “They had so much energy, supported each other and were excited to share their passion for history,” Landesman said. She also noted broader participation in this year’s event. “More schools and students participated in this year’s competition then had in the past.”
Bronxville High had students recognized in multiple categories at the state contest. Cathy Kuang placed third in the individual exhibit category and will serve as an alternate.
In the group website category, Leo Cipriani, Gabe Hanjis and Wilhelm Klose earned second place. That finish qualified them to represent Bronxville at the national level.
The state competition serves as the next step for students whose projects advance beyond local and regional rounds. For Bronxville, the results mean a national appearance this summer for the group website team, with another student also remaining in position as an alternate.
National History Day is built around student research and interpretation of a yearly historical theme. In this case, Bronxville students’ projects focused on “Revolution, Reaction and Reform in History,” a topic that asked participants to examine change, response and reform through historical events and figures.
The next date on the schedule is June 16, when the national competition is set to take place in Maryland. Bronxville’s qualifying students will move on after their state-level finish at SUNY Oneonta.
