At the Tuckahoe Public Library, Summer Reading Games Aren’t Just for Kids

Adults can enjoy a summer reading game too, with the library's "Cruise Into Reading" program.

Summer provides many working adults with the opportunity to relax, spend some time at the beach and catch up on their reading. Everyone Oprah to Amazon has their list of summer reading, and locally, the Tuckahoe Library is getting in on the action with a summer reading game for adults.

"Libraries all over the country serve people from birth to 100 all year long. The special thing about the summer program for adults is that they bring back memories from childhood when they had fun in the summer," said Debbie Coppola, Director of the Tuckahoe Public Library.

"The adult summer reading game is very popular because it is so much fun! Adults get to read, win prizes, enjoy fun activities, and meet other people too. Thanks to The Community Fund of Bronxville, Eastchester, and Tuckahoe we were able to continue the reading program for children, teens, and adults," she explained.

The library's 9th Annual Adult Summer Reading Game kicked off this past Wednesday. This year's theme: Cruise Into Reading.

That night, the library hosted a welcome aboard party at 6:30. Its highlight was the musical show, "From Broadway to Hollywood," featuring mezzo soprano Wanda Grochowski, and soprano Joanne Kant, accompanied by Marcia Slater.

Overall, the aim of the program is to maximize summer reading enjoyment. Each participant can read or listen to a book of their choice or select from the "ship's" library and then list the author and title of the book in the "ship's" log. After reading the first two books, participants will open a porthole and read books in that port of call, from countries like China, India, France, and Spain. In total, participants will read seven books by the end of the program.

Once each book is finished, participants can fill out a raffle ticket at the library. And anyone who completes the journey by reading all seven books receives a disembarkment gift.

The reading game continues for six weeks and ends on Wednesday, August 11th.

Throughout the program, readers can participate in a variety of other activities including deck chair yoga, entertainment, high tea, memoir writing workshop and a disembarkment party.

Each activity has limited seating, so call the library ahead of time at (914) 961- 2121.
