The witness said he got into a tan four-door sedan, with a New York license plate and a red brake light that extended over the top of the plate.
A white female with a large build was driving it, police said.
Video surveillance caught the car running a red light and proceeding south on White Plains Road.
While the video did not clearly display the license plate, the vehicle was determined to be a Buick that was missing both front hubcaps.
Police said the investigation continued until May 6 when Chief Christopher Satriale saw the Buick in Thornwood and recorded the license plate number.
That led to surveillance which resulted in the arrest of Velez.
The property taken from the Park Avenue residence consisted of two MacBook Pros, an iPad, a Louis Vuitton bag and jewelry.
A search warrant executed at Velez’s residence after being taken into custody resulted in the recovery of one of the MacBook Pros, police said.
Velez was remanded to the Westchester County Department of Corrections.
Police said Velez has 10 felony convictions, including three violent felonies, and three misdemeanor convictions on his record.
