Bronxville Elementary School Students Donate Candy

Bronxville Elementary School collected 820 pounds of candy during its 25th annual Halloween Candy Drive, which is the brainchild of art teacher Kendall Fousek. Special projects volunteers Deirdre Doheny and Natasha Yeoh, along with Katherine Bryce’s fourth-graders helped lead the collection efforts.

Fousek said the school donated a large portion of the candy to the Food Bank for Westchester, a not-for-profit organization that serves as a central collection, storage and distribution facility in Westchester County. The Food Bank provides food to 265 local hunger relief programs and estimates that it annually feeds more than 200,000 people in need in the county.

High school students, under the guidance of teacher Julie Clarke, will be sending some of the collected candy to U.S. troops, including former Bronxville students who have been stationed overseas. In addition, some of the candy will be given out when a group of Bronxville High School students meets with children at the Andrus School in December.

The Bronxville Elementary School Student Council, under the direction of teachers Lauren Carfora and Susan Engelhardt, is planning a special project in December that would include some of the candy as gifts during the holidays.

“Many thanks to all in the community who helped with this year’s candy drive,” Fousek said. “Heartfelt thanks to all the children who donated their Halloween treats for their generosity and caring.”
