Bronxville Resident Sworn in As US Naval Reserve Midshipman

BRONXVILLE, NY — On August 6, 2016, The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point welcomed Alejandro J. Urbina of the Class of 2020 into the Regiment of Midshipmen and was sworn in as a Midshipman of the United States Naval Reserve. He is a member of the USMMA Regimental band.

Urbina, a graduate of Tuckahoe High School’s Class of 2016 and a resident of Bronxville, will major in Maritime Logistics & Security and plans to join the United States Coast Guard upon graduation where he will work towards becoming a search and rescue pilot, according to information from a spokeswoman.

The Academy is the only federal service academy where graduates earn three graduation credentials – a Bachelor of Science Degree, an Officer’s commission in any branch of the military and a U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) license as a Deck or Engineering Officer. In preparation for USCG license exams, each midshipman will spend a minimum of 300 days at sea aboard U.S. flagged vessels involved in global trade or military operations.

As part of their service obligation, Kings Point graduates serve five years on active-duty in the military or sail five years as Officers in the U. S. Merchant Marine and six years in the reserves. USMMA is the largest single commissioning source for the U.S. Navy after the Naval Academy, ensuring a steady stream of leaders and merchant marine officers to support the nation’s economic and security interests.

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, located in Kings Point, NY, educates and graduates merchant mariners and leaders of exemplary character who will serve America’s maritime transportation and defense needs in peace and war. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy is administered by the Maritime Administration under the auspices of the Department of Transportation.
