Iona Players to Present Tony Award-Winning Musical “Come From Away” This Fall
Five performances in Murphy Auditorium will bring the inspiring true story of compassion and resilience to the Iona community.
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — Iona University will present the Tony Award-winning musical “Come From Away” this October in Murphy Auditorium. Produced by the Iona Players, the production will feature five performances celebrating the extraordinary true story of compassion, resilience and human connection in the wake of September 11, 2001.
Featuring book, music and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, “Come From Away” follows nearly 7,000 airline passengers stranded in Gander, Newfoundland, after U.S. airspace closed on Sept. 11. As the small Canadian town's population doubled overnight, residents opened their homes, schools and hearts to thousands of unexpected visitors, transforming a moment of uncertainty into one of extraordinary kindness.
"The message of ‘Come From Away’ is filled with a generosity of hope, strength in resilience and respect for humanity that remains as necessary today as it was during that fateful time, 25 years ago, as we rallied together following the events of September 11th," said Marc Dalio, Iona's director of Performing Arts. "Revisiting that moment now, with the beauty of this musical production, will continue to comfort those who remember, while inspiring a new generation with the remarkable potential of the human spirit."
Since its Broadway debut, “Come From Away” has earned worldwide acclaim, receiving 37 major award nominations and 13 wins, including Best New Musical at the 2019 Olivier Awards and Outstanding Musical at the 2017 Drama Desk Awards. Its message of empathy and community continues to resonate with audiences around the world.
The production marks the first Iona Players musical under the leadership of Marc Dalio, a Broadway veteran who joined Iona this year as the University continues to invest in and expand its performing arts programs. Dalio brings extensive experience spanning Broadway, national and international tours and higher education, including more than 2,200 performances as Gaston in “Beauty and the Beast.”
Iona will also welcome local K-12 students for a special performance, reflecting the University’s commitment to making the performing arts accessible to younger audiences and inspiring the next generation to experience, explore and engage with live theatre.
