Chapel School First Graders Thank Veterans

Chapel School First Graders Thank Veterans

Bronxville, NY- Each year, The Chapel School’s first graders are given an important homework assignment in early November. They are asked to identify a relative or family friend who fought in a war and bring the name and address of that veteran to school. A lesson in how to handwrite

letters results in a thank you note to his/her veteran for serving in the military to keep us safe from harm and protect our freedom. They are mailed from school in time to be received for Veteran’s Day.

Two students who are brothers, Charlie and Zachary Stewart had no idea the impact their letters would have on their veterans. Charlie’s veteran, an elderly neighbor, was so touched by Charlie’s letter that he put it on his refrigerator door and phoned his daughter to tell her about it. He died six weeks after receiving Charlie’s letter, which his daughter found on his bedside table.

Zachary sent his letter to his mother’s childhood friend who just retired from the Army. He contacted Zachary’s mother to tell her how much it touched him. Mrs. Deb Kolb, first grade teacher at The Chapel School stated, “We have been writing letters to our veterans and to give thanks for many years. It is truly heartwarming to know the impact these simple gestures can make.”

This Thanksgiving, we have so much for which to be thankful. Let us always remember to include the veterans and those serving today. The Chapel School is a place where service as a way of life is promoted to all students and families. Students participate in Midnight Runs, food collections for ECAP, and other projects to help those in need throughout the school year. Sharing time, talents, and treasures with people in the community and around the world distinguishes The Chapel School as a caring place where God’s love is freely shared.
