Elizabeth's Hope and Children's Brain Tumor Project to Hold 2015 Bronxville Road Race on September 12

Registration is now open for the second annual running of The Bronxville Road Race for the Children’s Brain Tumor Project, which is scheduled for the morning of September 12, 2015. Three events for runners and walkers of all ages, plus music and entertainment, will take place on the playing fields behind the Bronxville School. All proceeds benefit pediatric brain tumor research at Weill Cornell Brain and Spine Center.

The event is an official, timed NYCRuns event. A 1-mile “Kids Crush Cancer” Dash for those 13 and under will start the day at 8 am. A 5-mile course and a 2-mile walk/run, which begin 8:30 am, will start and end at The Bronxville School; both courses take a beautiful path along the Bronx River. Awards will be given to the top three male and female runners in each race (5-mile and 2-mile walk/run), to the top three in each 10-year age group in the 5-mile race, and to all finishers of the kids’ run. Awards will also be given to the top three fund-raisers for the Children’s Brain Tumor Project.

The Children’s Brain Tumor Project focuses on the research and treatment of rare and inoperable brain tumors that affect children and young adults. The CBTP was founded, in part, with the generous support of Elizabeth Minter (Bronxville High School Class of 2009) and her family, longtime residents of Bronxville. The Minters worked with Elizabeth’s neurosurgeon, Dr. Jeffrey Greenfield, in starting Elizabeth’s Hope to help fund this critical research. Elizabeth was diagnosed with a brain tumor called gliomatosis cerebri in 2010 and lost her battle with the disease in 2012. Since then, the Bronxville community has played a pivotal role in supporting Elizabeth’s Hope and the CBTP. Dr. Greenfield, a Bronxville resident himself, co-directs the research lab with Dr. Mark Souweidane.

Last year, the inaugural race raised more than $100,000 to support the research, which takes place at Weill Cornell’s Pediatric Brain and Spine Center. Scientists investigating new treatment options for rare and inoperable brain tumors can’t get federal funding or large grants to support their work, since these tumors strike “only” a few hundred children every year. Families whose children have been affected by these tumors do grassroots fund-raising to support the laboratory; Children’s Brain Tumor Project families from coast to coast hold events including races, lemonade stands, cocktail parties, golf outings, and garage sales to raise funds to support critical investigations into these tumors. Bronxville residents and businesses have been loyal supporters of Elizabeth’s Hope and the CBTP.

This year’s Bronxville Road Race has already signed on sponsors from all across Bronxville, including Houlihan Lawrence, the Pepe Auto Group, the Bronxville Running Store, Kensington Paper, Silk Road, Braxton Engineering, Sarah Lawrence College, Concordia College, Ballet Arts, Womrath Bookstore, J.
