EASTCHESTER, NY — A former doctor who was accused of stealing more than a half million dollars from an elderly woman will be spending time in jail. Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino Jr. said Thursday that former physician Peter Corines, 70, of Eastchester, was sentenced to one year in county jail.

Scarpino said Corines was sentenced to one year on each of the following charges to run concurrently:

  • Second-degree grand larceny, a felony
  • Second-degree attempted grand larceny, a felony
  • First-degree identity theft, a felony

Corines agreed to forfeit $11,600 of the victim's money found in his residence from a search warrant.

From the bench, presiding Westchester County Court Judge Barry Warhit told Corines that he "was a disgrace to a noble profession."

According to Scarpino, during a two-week period in November 2017, Corines, after ingratiating himself, stole from a 97-year-old elderly Yonkers woman by obtaining a power of attorney to benefit himself to reduce his mounting personal debt and infuse money into his failing yacht repair business in Florida.

Authorities said he did so by pretending to be her on the phone or online with numerous financial institutions where the victim had accounts.

Corines claimed to act in the woman's best interest and went into various banks and withdrew money from her accounts.

By pretending to be the woman, he called various mutual funds and requested checks from her accounts, police said.

Corines also set up online accounts to receive money from various mutual funds owned by the victim, and then Corines requested checks from the mutual funds, without her permission, authority or consent.

In total, Corines stole about $540,106.60 and attempted to steal $262,171.49, authorities said.

Corines was arrested by Yonkers police April 24, 2018, after the execution of a search warrant at his Eastchester home.
