Gramatan Village Executive Director Sherry Saturno traveled to Capitol Hill on March 7th to meet with New York legislators as an advocate and representative of the Academy of Social Work with the National Academies of Practice (NAP). Sherry is a Distinguished Practitioner and Fellow of NAP, which is a nonpartisan, non-profit organization that holds Congressional briefings, advises governmental bodies, and holds policy forums. One of the goals of this visit was to convey to legislators how interprofessional collaboration leads to healthier elders with an improved quality of life, and how education for policy makers around issues that impact the lives of older adults and their well-being is critical in supporting vibrant communities and empowered aging. Sherry met with the offices of Senator Chuck Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Congressman Eliot Engel, Congressman Lee Zeldin, and Congresswoman Nita Lowey.

Sherry also participated in the NAP Interprofessional Collaborative Practice Forum in Pentagon City and discussed the benefits of bringing professionals of different disciplines together to improve the quality of life for older adults across the nation. She has been recognized with a medallion from the Academy of Social Work in honor of fellowship and outstanding contributions to the field. Sherry, a licensed clinical social worker and licensed nursing home administrator, will present a workshop on Vibrant Aging and the Power of Connection which is open to the public at Columbia University School of Social Work on March 25th.
