IRS Scam Still Making The Rounds In Hudson Valley

The IRS never asks for payment using prepaid credit cards.

Police are reminding residents of the Hudson Valley that the “IRS Scam” is still going around in the region. The scam is where a caller says he or she is an agent of the Internal Revenue Service and requests that immediate payment be made for unpaid taxes via prepaid gift cards.

If the person being called doesn’t comply — usually within 30 minutes — the scammer said they will be arrested.

“Most of us know that the IRS does not make calls such as this and never requests immediate payment through any type of gift cards,” the Yonkers Police Department said.

“Unfortunately, our senior residents and new arrivals may not be aware that this type of fraud exists,” the YPD said.

It’s important for everyone to remember to remind our family, friends and neighbors that this is a scam, and that they should consult a family member or the Yonkers Police Department — 914-377-7900 — before making any payments via gift cards to anyone claiming to be a government representative.

Police said a phone number that has been used by these fraud callers recently is 240-917-2493, but the numbers change many times.

If you receive one of these calls, just hang up.

Investigation by federal authorities thus far has shown that these calls are primarily being made overseas, which puts local law enforcement at a disadvantage in investigating these complaints, police said.
