New Year, New Career: Education, Health and Business Services

For the past year, Educational, Health and Business Services have been among the strongest job sectors in New York.

According to the New York Department of Labor, in the 12 months ending in November 2015:

• Private educational and health services added the most jobs (+73,500) of any major industry sector over the past year. Sector job gains were mostly in health care and social assistance (+57,600), especially ambulatory health care services (+34,200).
• Construction had the second largest increase in jobs (+30,400) between November 2014 and November 2015. Over the past year, sector job gains were mostly in specialty trade contractors (+20,900).
• The third largest employment increase over the past year occurred in professional and business services (+28,300), with sector gains centered in professional, scientific and technical services (+16,800) and administrative and support services (+9,900).

Ever wonder what Educational and Health Services, or Professional and Business Services, means (other than the obvious, like teachers, nurses, accountants)?

Here’s how it works. To classify jobs, the New York State Labor Department follows the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code. Each industry sector and subsector is placed into the appropriate group.

The ones we’re interested in are defined thusly under NAICS:

• Professional and Business Services
  • Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services (NAICS 54)
  • Management of Companies and Enterprises (NAICS 55)
  • Administrative and Support and Waste Management and Remediation Services (NAICS 56)
    • Administrative and Support Services (NAICS 561)
    • Waste Management and Remediation Services (NAICS 562)
• Education and Health Services
  • Educational Services (NAICS 61)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (NAICS 62)
    • Ambulatory Health Care Services (NAICS 621)
    • Hospitals (NAICS 622)
    • Nursing and Residential Care Facilities (NAICS 623)
    • Social Assistance (NAICS 624)

So that means that Professional and Business Services span many different industries, whether it’s management or clerical or custodial.

Educational Services occupations are more workplace-specific: administrators, teachers and teaching assistants.

That’s true too for Health Care and Social Assistance, which includes medical and health services managers, home health aides and licensed vocational and licensed practical nurses.
