NY Philharmonic Plays Composition Written By 8th-Grade Eastchester Student

EASTCHESTER, NY — An eighth-grade Eastchester Middle School student had a musical composition performed by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at a concert Jan. 18.

Benjamin Araujo, 14, plays the trombone in the school’s band and jazz band under the direction of teacher Mark Dodge. He has even conducted a couple of pieces with the band at school concerts, according to a school spokeswoman.

His latest composition, entitled "A Postcard from New York City," was performed by the orchestra in David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center.

Araujo has been involved in music since he was 9 years old, performing in numerous operas and playing both piano and trombone. He is now participating in the New York Philharmonic's outreach program called “Very Young Composers,” an after-school and weekend program originally started in 1995 that allows young people to learn about composing music from teaching artists and professional musicians.

“Having one of the greatest, most prestigious orchestras in the world perform music that he wrote specifically for them is an experience and honor that cannot be overstated,” said Middle School Principal Scott Wynne.

Eastchester Schools Superintendent Dr. Walter Moran III, who attended the Wednesday event said it was a privilege of being in the audience to hear Benjamin’s opus. Having one's original composition performed by the New York Philharmonic is a rare and outstanding achievement.” He added, “The Eastchester UFSD is incredibly proud of him.
