Over 100 Environmental Leaders Endorse Latimer for County Executive

George Latimer received the endorsement of over 100 Environmental Leaders for Westchester County Executive

GEORGE LATIMER RECEIVES ENDORSEMENTS FROM 100 WESTCHESTER COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERS

In wake of Frequent Hurricanes and Repeal of Obama Era Clean Power Plan, Latimer Promises to Reestablish County Global Warming Taskforce

MAMARONECK- Today, at Harbor Island Park in Mamaroneck, George Latimer, Democratic nominee for Westchester County Executive, was endorsed by over one hundred environmental leaders and supporters from across the County. Westchester Environmentalists for Latimer is a consortium of supervisors, mayors, legislators, town councilpersons, trustees, members of municipal environmental advisory committees, environmental scholars/educators, and board members of environmental organizations who have chosen to endorse Latimer based off his environmental leadership.

Throughout his career Latimer has sponsored multiple bills protecting water resources, parkland and sustainability initiatives. In August, Latimer received a 100 percent scorecard from the New York League of Conservation Voters.

The endorsement comes in the wake of the frequent and dangerous hurricanes, which ravaged the Caribbean, and as the Trump administration announced their plan to repeal the Clean Power Plan passed under the Obama Administration to reduce greenhouse gases and fight climate change.

If elected, Latimer will reestablish the County Global Warming Task Force which was disbanded under the Astorino administration.

"George Latimer understands the importance of protecting our environment to reduce flooding, save money, improve resiliency and make the County more sustainable for future generations,” says Town of Mamaroneck Supervisor Nancy Seligson.

Chris Burdick, Supervisor of the Town of Bedford, described Latimer as “an environmental hero who would make a strong and lasting impact beginning with climate action -- saving our county money on wasted energy costs while reducing greenhouse gas emissions."

“George Latimer knows that a healthy environment is essential to Westchester’s quality of life, economy, and future,” added Noam Bramson, New Rochelle’s environmentally-minded mayor. “We can count on George to be a champion of our parks and natural resources, to promote clean, cost-effective energy and to lead the charge against climate change."

Latimer has also opposed the controversial routing of a high-pressure gas transmission pipeline that is slated to pass close to the Indian Point nuclear power plant. Astorino’s administration cut down a portion of the Blue Mountain Reserve for the gas pipeline.

“Our fight to protect the environment is about protecting our health and safety; our homes and our families; and the world our children will inherit. I am honored to be endorsed by such a large and distinguished grassroots group of Westchester County environmentalists,” Latimer said. “Safe drinking water is a right. Fighting climate change is a moral and financial imperative. Protecting our parkland and open spaces is critical to ensuring the quality of life Westchester families deserve. Throughout my public career and personal life, I have always placed environmental issues high on my list of priorities, and as County Executive I will make sure that we take every opportunity to make this a cleaner and greener County.”
