Sarah Lawrence College’s 14th Annual Poetry Festival Set for April 21-23
The festival will include readings by acclaimed poets and Sarah Lawrence undergraduate and graduate poetry students
April 12, 2017 – The 14th Sarah Lawrence College Annual Poetry Festival, the largest free, student-run poetry festival in New York State, takes place April 21-23 on the College’s Bronxville-area campus. The festival, open to the public, will include readings by acclaimed poets and Sarah Lawrence undergraduate and graduate poetry students; craft talks; generative sessions; a book fair; and a special event of readings and recordings of poems by incarcerated individuals at the Westchester County Correctional Facility, presented by students who have worked with them in the College’s Right-to-Write program.
“We’re honored to be joined by fourteen bold, transformative poets from across the country who are changing the landscape of American poetry,” say co-directors of the festival, Sreshtha Sen, MFA ’17 and Theresa Sullivan, MFA ’17.
The poets who will read from their work include: J. Mae Barizo, author of The Cumulus Effect, Joshua Bennett, winner of the 2015 National Poetry Series; Lucie Brock-Broido, whose most recent collection, Stay, Illusion was a finalist for the National Book Award, the Kingsley Tufts Award in Poetry, and the National Book Critics Circle Award; Aracelis Girmay, recently published in Spoon River Poetry Review, Harvard Review, Granta, Poetry, and Prairie Schoooner; Jeffrey Harrison, a finalist for the 2015 Massachusetts Book Award; Rachel McKibbens, a two-time New York Foundation for the Arts poetry fellow; Erika Meitner, a National Poetry Series winner for Ideal Cities; sam sax, two-time Bay Area Grand Slam Champion; Robin Beth Schaer, whose writing has appeared in Tin House, Paris Review, and Guernica, among others; Brenda Shaughnessy, whose work has appeared in Best American Poetry, Harper's, The New York Times, The New Yorker and elsewhere; Monica Youn, 2010 National Book Award Finalist for Ignatz; Ocean Vuong, winner of the 2016 Whiting Award for Night Sky with Exit Wounds; Matthew Zapruder, author of four collections of poetry and editor-at-large at Wave Books; and Rachel Zucker, poet, teacher and host of the podcast Commonplace: Conversations with Poets (and Other People).
