Staying Hot: Lake Isle Swim Make It Two for Two
Lake Isle Swimming & Diving defeated Rye Golf -- and the heat -- Monday morning, winning their second dual meet in five days.
On one of the hottest days of the summer so far, the boys and girls from the Lake Isle Swimming & Diving Team stayed hot, winning their second dual meet in the span of five days and making it two for two sor far this season. After defeating the team from the Larchmont Yacht Club last Thursday, Lake Isle took down Rye Golf on Monday morning at the Lake Isle Country Club pool, scoring 250 points to Rye’s 220.
Monday’s meet also saw some familiar faces out in the lead for Lake Isle, as brothers Chris and Nick Torres – new additions to the team this year – were the meet’s sole triple winners. Chris finished first in the 8 & Under boys freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke events, while older brother Nick took first in the 10 & Under boys freestyle, backstroke and butterfly. Nick has yet to lose a race in the team’s first two meets, and Chris has only finished out of first place once, a close second to teammate Johji Nonaka at last Thursday’s meet.
“The boys are both very outgoing and friendly, and have made lots of friends on the team already,” Lake Isle Head Coach Kevin Lavelle said. “But they are also great competitors who really turn it on when they are in a race, and that’s an important part of being a successful swimmer. They both have so much talent and potential and really have a chance to become something special in the sport. I get so excited to think I may get to coach them for the next eight or nine years.”

Lake Isle also got stellar performances from a number of its more experienced swimmers Monday, as the team tallied up six double-winners, including Georgia Lazaroni (12 & Under girls backstroke and breaststroke), Dawnson Galluzzi (Lake Isle 12 & Under boys freestyle and backstroke), Robert Warner (14 & Under boys freestyle and backstroke), Sora Shiraishi (17 & Under boys freestyle and breaststroke) and Declan Kennon (17 & Under boys backstroke and butterfly). Juliana Rivera was Lake Isle’s last double-winner, taking home the 8 & Under girls freestyle and backstroke.
The swimmers from Rye Golf weren’t the only ones trying to beat Lake Isle Monday morning, however, as scorching 90-degree temperatures made it a bit busier day than usual, especially for the Lake Isle coaching staff.

“The weather does bring on some challenges but we try and keep the kids hydrated and in the shade as much as possible,” Lavelle said. “When they’re not in a race the kids can jump in the main part of the pool for a quick dip to cool off, but we try and limit that so they don’t wear themselves out too much. As long as they aren’t running around and over exerting themselves I don’t think it affects them too much, but it’s something we keep an eye on. I think the heat might affect those of us who can’t get wet a bit more.”
Lake Isle will try to make it a perfect three in a row this coming Thursday as they host Greenburgh from 8 a.m. to noon.
