EASTCHESTER, NY — A banner quoting Martin Luther King Jr. and hung from an Eastchester house has been ordered removed because it was in violation of town code. The sign on Dan and Avisia Brown's home read, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

Dan Brown found a note in the dirt alongside his house Sunday — not in his mailbox — that was from the Eastchester building inspector, the Journal News reported, that they could be fined up to $1,000 a day or go to jail if the banner was not removed.

Avisia Brown said she has been putting up banners of a similar size for holidays in years past without the town or neighbors complaining.

The letter from the town said the sign violated the fire code because it was hung over a front window and was an installed sign, WNBC-TV reported.

Dan Brown said he did take the banner down but left in place four other smaller signs related to Black Lives Matter because his neighbors have school-related and other signs on their properties.
