Tuckahoe Students Explore Character Building

The activities included a visit from the new Westchester county executive.

TUCKAHOE, NY — As part of an annual tradition, as well as Tuckahoe Union Free School District’s emphasis on student life, growth and development, William E. Cottle Elementary School is taking part in two school-wide character-building programs during the month of February spearheaded by the Tuckahoe PTA and SEPTA. In observation of National Random Acts of Kindness Week, from Feb. 12-16, students are participating in daily activities designed to focus on the benefits of giving and receiving kind acts. Themes include Make Someone Smile Monday, Take Action Tuesday and Team Up Thursday.

Activities vary from putting inspirational sticky notes in library books, giving away kindness coupons, a food drive and school spirit events such as fifth-grade students reading favorite kindness books to kindergarten classes.

As part of the festivities, and following up on World Read Aloud Day earlier this month, Westchester County Executive George Latimer visited two fourth grade classes and read “So You Want To Be President” by Judith George to the students.

When students get back from winter break, they will delve right into the Building Bridges: Understanding People with Different Abilities program. This annual program provides students with an introduction to understanding people with different abilities through hands-on classroom activities and guest speakers.

The week will culminate with a panel of Tuckahoe High School students relating experiences with their own disabilities to elementary students.
