UPDATE: Former Concordia Assistant Basketball Coach Killed in Mount Vernon Shooting and Car Crash

This story was updated at 3:56 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, 2015: Former Concordia College Assistant Basketball coach Kevin Shaw, 26, has been identified as one of the victims from Wednesday morning’s homicide in Mount Vernon.

Head Basketball Coach Brian Sondey confirmed the news on the team’s Twitter page (see the tweet below), one of several under the hashtage #RipKevShaw.

Shaw and Allashun Clay, 27, were speeding in a BMW convertible when they struck a parked SUV near the intersection of East Third Street and Warwick Avenue just before 5 a.m. The car flipped over and landed upside down.

Police said both men had suffered at least one gunshot wound each prior to the crash, which changed the case from an accident to a homicide investigation. Clay has been identified as the driver, writes WABC-TV.

“We don’t know if the individuals were killed as a result of the gunshot wounds they sustained or if the accident killed them,” said Mount Vernon Police Commissioner Terrance Raynor during a press conference Thursday.

Clay, a music producer, and Shaw reportedly had attended a music release party at the strip club Sue’s Rendezvous prior to the crash.

When and where the gunshots were fired, and who pulled the trigger are still being pieced together by investigators.

“Whether they were shot and continued driving on Third Street, or were shot right before the crash, is to be determined,” Raynor added.

Mount Vernon police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the department at (914) 665-2510. Calls will be kept confidential.

Original story: The two New York City men who died Wednesday morning in Mount Vernon - when the BMW convertible they were riding in crashed and flipped over - had been shot, and police are investigating it as a homicide.

Exactly when they had been shot is not yet known, but both had gunshot wounds to the upper parts of their bodies, according to Mount Vernon Police Commissioner Terrance Raynor, as reported by The Journal News.

It also appears that the two had been targeted, Raynor added.

The identities of the two men were expected to be released at some point today.

The crash occurred at the intersection of East Third Street and Warwick Avenue after the BMW struck a parked SUV and rolled over.
