Initial information has revealed that a 911 call was made to the Yonkers Police Communications Division at approximately 4:16 p.m., the caller related that occupants of the van were breaking into parking meters in the area of 4 Schroeder Street. Responding Officers in a marked police unit had been made aware of the stolen van at the start of their tour during their roll call briefing. As the marked unit canvassed the area of North Broadway and Lamartine Avenue, the stolen van was observed. The marked unit followed the suspect vehicle and in the area of Warburton Avenue and Glenwood Avenue, made an attempt to pull the suspect vehicle over by activating their emergency lights. The suspect vehicle did not pull over and continued northbound on Warburton Avenue, where the suspect vehicle subsequently struck the Hyndai Sonata, which was travelling southbound on Warburton Avenue. Based on witness statements and video obtained in the area thus far, the distance between the suspect vehicle and the marked unit fluctuated before the accident occurred. Video also reveals that the suspect vehicle crossed over the double yellow line, driving northbound on the southbound side of Warburton Avenue.
The continuing investigation will include the recovery of possible surveillance video, examination of physical evidence, forensic analysis, accident reconstruction, and the canvassing and interviewing of possible witnesses.
Information has been developed that the occupants of the van, as well as additional suspects not involved at the accident scene, may have been involved in other criminal activity with the stolen van in the recent past.
It should be noted that this investigation is in the early stages and our Detectives and Internal Affairs investigators are working closely with the Office of the Westchester County District Attorney on this matter. Anyone with information can contact the Detective Division at 914-377-7724.
