Yonkers BOE Votes To Give President Salary
Board members said it would put the district on par with the other large city school systems.

YONKERS, NY — While most members of public school boards are unpaid volunteers, the Yonkers Board of Education at its Dec. 20 meeting voted to give its president an annual salary of $15,000. The Rev. Steve Lopez, the current board president, will receive the stipend retroactively to July 1.
The Yonkers board said it wanted to make its board of education on par with other large districts, lohud.com said.
The resolution the board voted on said Article 52 of the Education Law governs the function of the city school districts of Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica and Yonkers and that there is no prohibition to providing members of boards of education from receiving a salary or stipend for their work on behalf of the district.

Board members compared the Yonkers district with Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse as being similar in student population, staff employment and building operations.
The resolution also states that if the board president is no longer in office for any reason he or she immediately ceases to receive the stipend and the successor is then entitled to the remainder of the stipend for the year.
