4 People Killed This Weekend in Brooklyn

Two people were fatally shot, and two were killed in separate traffic collisions.

BROOKLYN, NY — Three people were killed, and several more were injured in various incidents this weekend in Brooklyn.

On Sunday at around 8 a.m. Brooklynite Donnell Thomas was shot outside of his home on Saint Johns Place and Troy Avenue in Brooklyn.

Thomas, 37, was shot in the chest and then transported to NYC Health and Hospitals/Kings County, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the perpetrator fled the scene, and no arrests have been made yet. The investigation remains ongoing.

At 10:15 a.m., a 63-year-old pedestrian was hit by an SUV at Myrtle Avenue and Broadway, and he died shortly after at Woodhull Hospital, New York Police Department officials said. No arrests have been made yet, and the driver stayed on the scene.

Then, around 11:30 a.m., NYPD officials said that Can Nomer, a 40-year-old man driving an SUV, hit a cyclist before crashing into a parked car on Union Avenue near Lynch Street.

Emergency responders transported Luis Mendez, the cyclist, to NYC Health and Hospitals/Kings County where he was pronounced dead. Mendez was 46 years old, NYPD officials said.

Nomer was arrested a few hours later and accused of manslaughter, not having a license and driving under the influence.

Mid-afternoon, a gunman opened fire on the West Indian Day Parade, killing Denzel A. Chan, 25, and injuring four others around 2:30 p.m. at the parade on the 300 block of Eastern Parkway. More on that here.

Then, at around 11:30 p.m., a 37-year-old man was shot in Cypress Hills near Hemlock Street and Ridgewood Avenue, NYPD officials said. The man is expected to recover. No arrests have been made yet.
