🌱 6 Year Old Brings Gun To School + Ferry + New Citi Bike Stations

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Brooklyn.

(Patch Media)

Hello there, Brooklyn! I'm here in your inbox per usual to tell you everything you need to know about what's going on in town. Today's issue includes:

  • Two students brought guns with them to school yesterday
  • Greenpoint is back on the ferry map
  • Get ready to see some more Citi Bike stations in 2023

But first, today's weather:

🌧 Tropical Rainstorm Nicole (warm and rainy). High: 68 Low: 65.

Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:

1. Yesterday, two schools found guns in the backpacks of students — the 6-year-old's was loaded. At a charter school in the Bronx, a 6 year old was dropped off by his uncle, and when he opened his backpack, found another bag with a loaded gun inside. Presumably, the child did not know the gun was in there, and officials have contacted the boy's mother. Around the same time, police say they found a 14-year-old boy in possession of a 9 mm. handgun at Brooklyn Collegiate Prep High School on Bergen Street in Brownsville. The gun was not loaded. Sources familiar with the investigation say there is a video of the 14 year old displaying firearms with other students.

2. After two years, Greenpoint is officially back on the NYC Ferry map. It was announced yesterday that come Monday, Nov. 14, the Greenpoint ferry landing will be reopening. The neighborhood lies on the East River Route "which connects to Hunters Point South in Queens and East 34th Street in Manhattan traveling north, as well as North Williamsburg, South Williamsburg, and DUMBO in Brooklyn and Wall Street/Pier 11 in Manhattan traveling south." In May 2021, when a ferry captain's hawk eye spotted damage to the Greenpoint pier, the landing was closed for repairs. Since the pier is one of the few privately-owned stops, its owners said they faced multiple permitting delays in their attempt to repair the structure—which explains the two-year wait. Tickets will be slightly more expensive now, but commuters hopefully won't have to worry about the pier road flooding on their way to work anymore.

3. After a successful five years in New York City, Citi Bike is expanding into central Brooklyn. Yesterday, the Transportation Department announced via social media that Prospect Park South, Flatbush, Ditmas Park, and a sliver of Prospect Lefferts Gardens will see new blue docking stations come 2023. By the afternoon, the Transportation Department had already seen requests for 52 suggested docking locations in the area. Reviews were mixed from Brooklynites who engaged with the announcement; while some enthusiastically gave spots they'd like to see these new bikes, another user suggested "Nowhere." There are currently 25,000 bikes and more than 1,500 stations docks across the system, which reaches north to Norwood in The Bronx, west to Jersey City and Hoboken, east to the Bed-Stuy-Brownsville border and south to Bay Ridge. It is unclear how many new docks and bikes will be introduced in 2023.
