The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Brooklyn.

(Patch Media)

Hi all. It's me, Carlie Houser, your host of the Daily. Here's all the community news you need to know right now, including...

  • Some serious malpractice
  • A missed trial
  • The cannabis czarina

But first, today's weather. Goodbye sunshine:

🌧 Windy; heavy p.m. showers. High: 69 Low: 56.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Brooklyn who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Brooklyn Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:

1. Narcotic nightmare: Brooklyn medical doctor charged with illegally distributing more than 1.2 million oxycodone pills. In federal court, Dr. Somsri Ratanaprasatporn and seven others (including three pharmacists) were charged with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute oxycodone and related crimes in a 10-count indictment. Despite their medical obligation to do no harm, eight medical practitioners have been found guilty of the dangerous distribution of a harmful narcotic known to have severe addictive side effects.

Department of Justice

2. Accused Brooklyn subway shooter Frank James skipped his court date. James is the accused perpetrator of the subway shooting on a crowded N train in Sunset Park. After his arrest in the East Village by NYPD on April 13 of this year (a day after the incident), James plead not guilty on May 13 to federal charges against him for the shooting which resulted in injuries to 29 straphangers, including 10 by gunshot wounds. Judge William Kuntz, the senior District Court judge overseeing the case, was appalled by the defendant's failure to show up to court and ordered U.S. Marshals to the retrieve him at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.

AMNY

3. East New York native Dasheeda Dawson is taking the NYC cannabis scene by storm. Yesterday, the Department of Small Business Services and the mayor's office announced the appointment of Dawson as founding director of Cannabis NYC, an initiative designed to spearhead the city's growing cannabis industry. Dawson said that her new role is a full-circle moment, having "survived the height of cannabis prohibition and witness[ing] targeted enforcement derail the lives of [her] family and friends." Not only does she hope to improve business strategies for up-and-coming cannabis vendors, Dawson is also keen on promoting education about the plant and making its medicinal uses available to those who need it.

4. Schermerhorn Street just got safer for cyclists. Officials in Downtown Brooklyn unveiled a new project that aims to make the heavily trafficked bike route safer for its thousands of daily commuters. "All roads lead to downtown Brooklyn," said NYC Councilmember Lincoln Restler, who represents the 33rd district. The planned redesign will make Schermerhorn a one-way street and introduce 1.2 miles of protected, two-way bike lanes. Maybe it's time to buy that bike or get that Citi Bike membership!

CBS New York

5. Is Brooklyn Heights becoming the next West Village? Steve Kurutz at The New York Times has been looking at the Brooklyn neighborhood for quite some time now, specifically at its growing celebrity population. Wielding their great blades of social and online influence, celebrities have been posting up a storm about the once-quaint little bakeries and local shops that dot their new Brooklyn stomping grounds. I say "once" because as soon as that one unknown spot hits Instagram its doors will never see peace again. Great for business, but how do lifelong residents feel about their rapidly changing neighborhood?
