Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:

1. Mayor Eric Adams is opening a new shelter for migrants, one with sweeping views of the Statue of Liberty and New York Harbor. The fifth Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center can house up to 1,000 single males and will be located inside the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook sometime next week, as early as Wednesday, according to a Post source. Most of the occupants would be people from the city's already packed Watson Hotel humanitarian relief center in Midtown. "Our city is at its breaking point," Mayor Adams said in a statement about the cruise terminal plan.

2. New allegations have been leverage against the city for violating the right to shelter for women entering its homeless system. Victims have been citing poor conditions, long delays, and accommodations for migrants are causing them to choose the streets instead. One woman, Kathia Wiscovitch, is a domestic abuse victim and reported being forced to leave her Brooklyn home last weekend — however, she was unable to find accommodation from the city and opted to sleep in a rental car instead. According to text message between Wiscovitch and a caseworker with the City's Family Justice Center, Kathia was mistakenly sent to a shelter on Williams Avenue in Brooklyn in search of a bed. Despite signage for a "Women's Help Center," Wiscovitch was turned away. She later learned that the Williams Avenue shelter was no longer a place for women, but rather the city recently repurposed it to house migrant men.

3. Mixed media artist Demarcus McGaughey debuts "Kindred," a Black History Month exhibit honoring six generations. From Saturday, February 4 to Sunday, February 26, the solo art exhibit will be featured at Sweet Lorraine Gallery at Ti Art Studios in Brooklyn. According to City Life, "Kindred" is McGaughey's "most intimate and revealing series of work yet," one that can be described as "a long walk home." The artists presents a wealth of renderings that memorialize, honor, and make timeless a series of family moments going back generations. "While creating the work for 'Kindred,' I transported myself to a time where the appreciation of tangible items held a weight much heavier than present day," McGaughey says.
