BROOKLYN, NY— An 18-year-old was shot and killed steps from his home at a Brooklyn public housing complex Sunday afternoon, police said.

Officers responded shortly after 3 p.m. to a 911 call reporting a shooting near the NYCHA Van Dyke Houses on Blake Avenue in Brownsville, according to the NYPD.

When officers arrived, they found Quahmir Cruz with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Emergency crews rushed Cruz to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Investigators said Cruz lived at the Van Dyke Houses. Detectives continued canvassing the area Monday as they worked to determine what led to the shooting and whether the gunman knew the victim.

Police had not announced any arrests as of Monday morning.

The shooting unfolded in the 73rd Precinct, which covers Brownsville and Ocean Hill. NYPD data shows the precinct recorded one homicide through May 3, matching the total recorded during the same period last year.

The same data shows shootings in the precinct dropped by 50 percent compared with the same period in 2025.

The investigation remains ongoing.
