Weather forecast:
1. Brooklyn Could See Massive Housing Growth, Transit Expansion (patch.com) — Brooklyn residents are being asked to help shape major rezoning plans along Coney Island Avenue, McDonald Avenue, and other corridors south of Prospect Park, where new housing and affordable units could rise near strong transit. City planners are tying the South of Prospect study to future projects like the Interborough Express, with workshops and online tools launching this summer so Brooklyn voices can influence how their neighborhoods grow.
2. Second Death In 24 Hours Reported At NYC Jail Complex (patch.com) — A man’s death at Rikers Island marked the second fatality in the city jail system in under 24 hours, intensifying scrutiny of conditions behind bars. In Brooklyn, public defenders, labor organizers and elected officials marched from Brooklyn Criminal Court along Jay Street to the Kings County District Attorney’s Office, demanding investigations and systemic reforms after a woman gave birth in a courtroom.
3. $21 Million NYC Park Overhaul Stalled Over Judicial Parking, Officials Say (patch.com) — Brooklyn leaders are pushing a $21 million plan to transform Columbus Park, next to Borough Hall, into a larger green space with playgrounds, a skate park and lawns. The project, which would stretch from Joralemon to Tillary streets, is stalled as judges resist giving up a long-used parking lot that sits on land officially zoned as parkland.
4. Brooklyn Org announces $1.5 million in funding (brooklyneagle.com) — Brooklyn Org just committed more than $1.5 million in multi-year grants to 15 Brooklyn nonprofits tackling housing, youth programs, transit advocacy, immigrant support, and more. Selected by a committee of Brooklynites, these groups will support local arts, legal aid, green jobs, and youth justice efforts across the borough.
5. Man who escaped police custody near Brooklyn courthouse apprehended: NYPD (pix11.com) — Police have re-arrested a 21-year-old man who escaped custody near Brooklyn Criminal Court on Schermerhorn Street after being transported from the 73rd Precinct.
