NEW YORK — A detective was shot early Sunday morning in Crown Heights in an encounter with a teen in which three officers fired their weapons, according to police.
The incident occurred around 4:15 a.m. in the area of Nostrand Avenue and St. Johns Place, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference streamed on Facebook, during which she identified the victim as Detective Robert Carroll of the Sex Offender Monitoring Unit.
An 18-year-old man, who had been captured on camera with a gun in his hand five minutes before the shooting and one block from the scene, approached an unmarked police vehicle, according to Tisch. Officers exited and attempted to engage the armed teen, and three officers discharged their weapons, Tisch said, adding the teen was not struck.
There is no body camera footage of the incident, according to Tisch, who noted the encounter left bullet holes in the police vehicle’s front and rear windshields as well as its passenger side.
After a foot pursuit, the teen was apprehended at Rogers Avenue and Union Street, Tisch said, adding that he resisted arrest and was Tased and taken into custody. A 9-millimeter gun was recovered, according to Tisch.
Carroll was struck in the ballistic vest and suffered a back contusion, Tisch said, adding a second officer suffered a contusion to the face and shoulder. Both were taken to Kings County Hospital Center, according to Tisch, who said Carroll is expected to make a full recovery.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani at the news conference described Carroll as “a husband and father of three children.”
