When officers arrived, they found Sofronie Hartzog suffering from a gunshot wound to the back and the male victim with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

EMS rushed Hartzog to Brookdale University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The wounded man went to Kings County Hospital on his own and remained in stable condition, according to police.

The woman was not believed to be the shooter's intended target, according to police.

Born in Leesville, South Carolina, Hartzog later attended Newberry Adult Education, where she worked toward completing her high school credential.

In 2022, the Newberry Observer featured her as one of three women participating in the program's summer boot camp, where she navigated child-care challenges while preparing for her remaining exams. Hartzog was a mother of five.

From Aug. 3 to Aug. 9, the 77th Precinct recorded seven shooting incidents involving eight victims, compared with eight incidents involving 11 victims during the same period in 2025, according to NYPD CompStat.

No arrests had been made.
