BROOKLYN, NY— A New York City Department of Sanitation truck struck and killed a 30-year-old woman crossing Bay Parkway in Brooklyn on Wednesday evening, according to the New York Police Department.
Siobhan Lynch, of Brooklyn, crossed Bay Parkway at Cropsey Avenue around 6:35 p.m. when the eastbound truck turned right onto the parkway and hit her, police said.
Emergency medical workers took Lynch to NYU Langone Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.
The 41-year-old truck driver remained at the scene and has not been arrested. The NYPD's Highway District Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the crash.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration launched its Dusk and Darkness campaign Thursday to protect pedestrians and cyclists during fall and winter evenings through public education and traffic enforcement.
Mike Flynn, the city's transportation commissioner, said traffic deaths typically peak during this period.
"My message to all New Yorkers is simple: slow down, look for pedestrians and cyclists, and use caution when turning at intersections," Flynn said at a news conference.
The New York Police Department plans to target speeding, failure to yield and distracted driving during the evening commute as part of the campaign.
