SUNSET PARK— A fast-moving three-alarm fire tore through a two-story Brooklyn home between Sixth and Seventh avenues, killing six adults and injuring nine others, including firefighters and police officers, officials said.
Firefighters arrived at 653 58th St. in Sunset Park at about 1:43 a.m., just three minutes and 18 seconds after receiving the emergency call.
They encountered heavy flames spreading through the basement and both floors, with fire pouring from the building's windows.
Four adults died at the scene, and two others died at a hospital, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced at an 8 a.m. news conference.
Four civilians also suffered injuries, along with three firefighters and two police officers, who sustained minor injuries.
"I would like to ask all of us gathered here today, as well as New Yorkers across our city, to take a moment to pray for the full recovery for those who were injured and for the families who have lost their loved ones and whose lives have been devastated by this morning's fire," Mamdani said.
Firefighters rescued four people from the burning building and rushed them to local hospitals. Two survived, according to Fire Department officials.
Two other occupants became trapped behind window bars at the rear of the first floor. Firefighters entered through a rear entrance and pulled them to safety.
The flames threatened neighboring homes in a tightly packed row of wooden buildings.
Fire officials warned that the structures, built with wooden roofs, floors, walls and exterior sheathing beneath vinyl siding, can catch fire and spread flames rapidly.
Firefighters deployed hose lines on all three levels and contained the blaze before it spread further. The neighboring building on the right sustained some fire extension.
The fire partially collapsed the building's staircase, forcing firefighters to place a portable ladder between the first and second floors as crews continued operations. Officials are also evaluating the building's structural stability.
Fire marshals are investigating the cause. Officials have not yet determined what sparked the blaze.
Separately, just after 2 p.m. Wednesday, firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire at 525 Vanderbilt St. in Brooklyn.
Crews encountered flames on the first floor that had spread to the second story and roof of the two-story building.
Firefighters stretched four hose lines and conducted searches before bringing the blaze under control shortly before 3 p.m., according to Deputy Chief Charles Downey.
