Suarez was running near Bay 17th Street when the attack happened. She was stabbed twice in the neck, Patch reported.

Suarez's father went looking for her when she didn't answer her phone, and found her with injuries. She died a few days after the attack.

ABC7NY reported that Mohassib was identified from surveillance video from a shopping center where Suarez worked. A knife was also found in a landfill on Staten Island, according to ABC7.

Police said the attack was random.

Mohassib briefly worked with the NYPD, before resigning and joining the military, ABC7 reported.

NBC News reported that he was removed from military service due to mental health issues. He attempted to rejoin NYPD, but was taken to the psychiatric ward after trying to get his job back.

He had most recently worked as a teacher's aide at a school in Brooklyn.
