Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:

1. A Brooklyn school opts in to a nationwide pilot program to bring race studies into the AP curriculum. At a time when teaching about race is under assault in the U.S., 60 schools across the country, including Brooklyn Preparatory High School, are introducing a rigorous African American Studies program to the AP course-list. In 2020, after the killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd galvanized racial injustice protests globally, students, teachers, parents, and administrators at Brooklyn Prep convened to discuss how strengthen—and in may cases, introduce—race education in New York public schools. With the help of their assistant principal and the backing of the 'AP for All' initiative of the New York City Department of Education, students and staff launched a petition calling for African American studies to be represented in the high school curriculum. Almost tow years later, their work has paid off.

2. Recent disturbing video footage shows a man pushing a fellow subway passenger on the tracks in Brooklyn. As the city struggles to come to terms with increasing violent crime rates in and on the subway, another man became a victim at around 2:40 a.m. on Friday on a northbound L train platform at the Wyckoff Avenue and Myrtle Avenue subway station, cops said. Disturbing new video evidence shows a subway shover charge a 32-year-old man from across a Brooklyn platform and knock him onto the tracks in an unprovoked attack. After tackling the stranger onto the track, the aggressor ran back to his post, grabbed his bag, and existed through the turnstiles. police released a still image of the suspect on Saturday, who is still at large. Fortunately the victim was not struck by a train, and suffered only an injury to his shoulder—as well as a large bout of shock, said an MTA station employee.

3. A 66-year-old man was fatally struck in a hit-and-run in Sunset Park. The victim, Jose Hernandez, was crossing the street at 4th Avenue at 59th Street when he tripped and fell. He was on the ground for a while until a car came, hit him, and drove off. Hernandez was rushed to a nearby hospital and died shortly after. According to those who knew him, the Hernandez owned a small business nearby and had difficulty getting around. Police reported they have located the 54-year-old driver, but no charges have been filed at this time.
