Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:
1. A man is in custody after the attempted abduction of a 9-year-old boy from a Brooklyn synagogue yesterday morning. Just after 9:30 a.m., a man in traditional Jewish garb allegedly tried to abduct a boy from a synagogue in Gravesend, Brooklyn on East 7th Street. The boy was attending a bris at the synagogue and the 42-year-old suspect was praying, when he approached the boy and asked him to come outside. When the boy said, "No," the suspect picked up the child and tried to walk out with him. Thankfully, the boy's mother intervened and pulled her son out of danger. The suspect was later found by Flatbush Shomrim allegedly hiding in a nearby yeshiva — he does not appear to have any relation to the yeshiva where the attempted abduction occurred. The 42 year old has been charged with kidnapping, endangering the welfare of a child and harassment.
2. There's a civil war happening in Brooklyn — the borough's Democratic Party has taken up arms against itself. During the midterm elections this past November, Democrats nationwide held their ground and against its Republican challengers. New York, however, experienced a massive red wave, and nowhere was the Republican force felt stronger than in Brooklyn. The borough is home to the Kings County Democratic Party and happens to be one of the largest political organizations in the United States. So how did it happen that in one of Brooklyn's neighborhoods, Bensonhurst, Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) lost by 32 points to her challenger Lee Zeldin (R)? In a multi-part investigation that took years to complete, two researchers by the names of George Joseph and Yoav Gonen dug into Brooklyn's political history to uncover how issues on the Democratic side — like redistricting and state-wide fears over crime and education — shaped a political climate that allowed a red wave to seep into the Democrats' stronghold on one of the state's bluest counties.
3. Two thieves wanted Snapple so badly that they punched and stabbed the owner of a Brooklyn deli to steal the beverage. Two suspects are wanted in an attack that happened on Monday at the Deli & Grill on Bedford Avenue in Prospect Lefferts Gardens. According to police, the 44-year-old owner attempted to intervene when he noticed the Snapple thieves' intentions. After a heated argument, the suspects attacked the deli owner, punching his face repeatedly and stabbing him in the back. The victim is currently recovering in the hospital, and as of Wednesday afternoon their whereabouts remain unknown.
