Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:
1. Wintry mix of rain and snow may make your commute to work tricky this morning. starting around 4 a.m., New York is expected to see its first 'snow' of the year. But don't expect to wake up in a winter wonderland, the snow showers bound for the Big Apple are of the slush variety. Showers are expected through to 9 a.m., impacting commuters with low visibility and slick roads. Silver lining: Today should be the worst of it, with slightly warmer temperatures and sunshine on Tuesday and Wednesday.
2. A mother is still searching desperately for answers after her 25-year-old daughter was involved in a deadly crash on her bike-ride to work inn Brooklyn. It's been nearly three months since Kala Santiago was hit by a truck while riding her bicycle to work; Santiago was riding along Parkside Avenue and Parade Place, right outside Prospect Park when the crash occurred. Santiago's mother, Leeanna Alois, is getting increasingly frustrated with the lack of answers. NYPD officials say Santiago was trying to pass a truck when she hit a parked vehicle, swerved into the roadway, and was run over by the wheels of the truck. However, Alois has heard conflicting stories from witnesses—one of whom was the driver of the parked car who said his review mirror was already broken before the incident, despite NYPD's assurance that Kala's broke it.
3. A string of burglaries in Williamsburg have residents on high alert. The break-ins began on Thursday night—suspects smashed their way through several businesses in Williamsburg, making off with cash in some cases. A total of six robberies were reported on Thursday, three of them on Kent Avenue, and the rest nearby. According to police, the two suspects started their spree at 3:30 on Thursday morning at the Mediterranean restaurant 12 Chairs. Police say the suspects then raided Dandy Wine Shop, before ending up at 2 Hands, where they likely did not get their hands on the type of paper they were hoping for. All in all, a pretty rough start for businesses in their first week on the new year.
