Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:
1. Illegally parked trucks and tractor-trailers have become "a quality-of-life issue" plaguing residents of southern Brooklyn. One Bay Ridge resident who's lived in the area for 15 years told the Brooklyn Paper that she began noticing the problem in 2019, and it's only been exacerbated by the pandemic. These large, illegally parked autos cause trash build up along the curb, not to mention they occupy valuable parking spaces. Residents have complained that these trucks and trailers have deeply affected their quality of life and are urging NYPD to crack down on the issue.
2. A 60-year-old woman was found dead in her Kensington apartment after her on-again off-again boyfriend barricaded himself inside with a self-inflicted wound. On Wednesday evening just before 8 p.m., the boyfriend, 62, called a friend to report a dead body in the victim's apartment on East 5th Street near Ditmas Avenue. According to residents in the building, the victim and her boyfriend were constantly fighting (police had been mostly visitors), including on Wednesday night the call was made. The boyfriend was heard yelling "B—h!" repeatedly. When NYPD arrived, the door was locked, and the boyfriend refused to let them in. When they finally entered, the woman was found dead with no signs of trauma, while the boyfriend suffered a knife wound to the chest. He was taken to the hospital for treatment and for psychological evaluation. An autopsy is being conducted to determine the 60 year old's cause of death.

3. A Brooklyn doctor produced his first ever short film and it's now been Oscar-shortlisted as one of top 15 documentaries in the world. After a humanitarian trip to Ukraine, Brooklyn-based doctor Conrad Fischer produced "Stranger at the Gate" with Emmy Award-winning director (and fellow New Yorker) Joshua Seftel. The film portrays the struggle of ex-U.S. Marine Mac McKinney who, after 25 years of service, returned home to Munsie, Indiana. However, McKinney quickly becomes overwhelmed by the growing Muslim population in his hometown — mostly refugees from Syria, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan — feeling reminded of his service oversees. McKinney quickly becomes angry and begins to plan a terrorist attack against a local mosque. For more, visit the link below.

🐝 Brooklyn Buzz:
- 🎬 Brooklyn has long been an inspiration for movies, books, and other bits of culture. Now, a local writer has watched, reviewed, and compiled a book about all of the instances that the borough's made it on the silver screen.: "'Filmed In Brooklyn' lays out all the sites of movie magic across the borough, but especially in Park Slope, author Margo Donohue's home since 1995." Learn more at the link. (Brooklyn Patch)
- Is New York the new Los Angeles? The question may seem strange, but it's one posed by New York Times writer Michael Grynbaum in this latest cultural piece about the changing Big Apple: "It's a balmy January afternoon. You buy an avocado and pickled turnip sandwich from Gjelina and some legal weed at a high-end smoke shop. After popping by a Fred Segal boutique, you meet friends for early mocktails under the trees at San Vicente Bungalows. It's an ideal Los Angeles day. And soon you won't have to leave Manhattan for it." Eyebrows raised? Read more at the link and decide for yourself if Grynbaum's onto something. (Subscription / The New York Times)
